Awesome Lactivist Moment

Getting ready to call it a night after another hectic day, but had to share a story from this morning...

Was on my way to the gym with the kids when I heard Emmitt laughing. I glanced over and noticed the guy in the car next to us had made some type of face at him. "That's sweet" I thought."

At the next light, I glanced over again and the guy was gesturing to me. I rolled down my window and he yelled "Hey, what does your license plate mean?"

(For those who weren't here when I showed it, it says "LACTVST")

"It says "Lactivist" which means breastfeeding advocate," I said.

"That's what I thought," he replied. "I called my wife when I saw it, she's an advocate too and says to tell you 'you rock!.'"

Now how cool is that?

Intro

I am incredibly honored that Jennifer invited me to blog on The Lactivist. I hope I can meet the high standards that have been set around here! :)

Figured I should introduce myself before I dive in and start posting my opinion on things, so here goes (don't worry - it's quick... I hate introductions!)

Let's see... Hi! I'm Anna. I'm 34 and very much a Libra. I've been married to Lee for 6 years, I'm Mama to Jonny (5.5yrs), Gracie (4yrs) and Levi (2yrs), and I'm Stepmama to Austin (11yrs). Austin lives in Boston with his mom for most of the year, but he does visit on summer break and for a few breaks during the school year. Lee is a SAHD who spoils me rotten (as in... I honestly don't remember the last time I touched the laundry, and yet I always seem to have clean clothes), and I work full-time as the Director of Operations for Lextant. I love my job, and Lee loves being at home... we wouldn't have it any other way.

As for breastfeeding, I think I'm somewhere around just over 4 years and counting. Well, not currently counting; Levi weaned around 18 months. However, as Jennifer mentioned, we're expecting twins(!) this summer, so the milk wagon will once again be in business! I confess: I'm nervous about working full-time and keeping up with breastfeeding two babies. Levi came to work with me every day until he was 9 months old, so that made breastfeeding relatively easy. I can probably bring the babies to work with me occasionally, but really... unless I have the best babies on the planet, the likelihood of them being able to accompany me daily is pretty slim.

Before we even get to nursing them, though, the big decision we're wrestling with right now is where to have them: at home with a midwife, or in the hospital with an OB. I'll write more on that subject in a separate post!

Well - that's me. I look forward to writing more, and to getting to know all of you!

Getting in Over My Head

Ever get a good idea, start to run with it and then find yourself racing downhill at breakneck speed with no ability to put on the breaks?

That's kind of what the last few months have been like.

For those who don't follow me over at my day job, I'm putting on a conference. Now you guys know I've traveled and done the speaking gig thing for years now...but this time, I'm actually planning and hosting the conference. I'm bringing in nine other speakers from around the company and have been working on marketing this event across the country.

Like most things I do, I charged into it full speed without any concept of how much work it was going to be. Like most things I do, I wasn't willing to back out when I realized just how far down the path I'd wandered.

So, I've had nary a second to breathe, let alone to post to here. I've missed the chance to comment on quite a few very interesting cases in the lactivist world. I'm missed the chance to share some very exciting kid-milestones with you. I've mostly missed you.

I'm also realizing that as a non-nursing mother it's sometimes a little harder to get into breastfeeding blogger mode. So, I've decided to bring on a little help. ;)

Some of you know Anna Swank. She's a friend of mine and is one of the founding members of the Ohio Breastfeeding Coalition. She's the mother who successfully got the Ohio Civil Rights Commission to take Lifestyle Family Fitness to task for booting her out because she was breastfeeding her son. She's nursed all three of her kids.

She's expecting twins. ;)

I thought she might bring some good perspective to the mix. I like her writing, I trust her judgment and I know she'll bring the same type of level-headed, yet not always "tow-the-line" style of breastfeeding advocacy to the mix as I do. I hope you'll welcome her on board as a blogger here.

I've been speaking to one or two other moms about coming on board as well. I'll still blog here, but realistically...I'm just not able to give the blog what it deserves by myself. I think we all value the community that has formed here, so I'd like to see the community keep the site moving forward.

Anna's the first to come on board, but you can expect to see others.

My conference is April 21st and 22nd, so if I maintain my sanity that long, I hope to be able to spend some more time here as well. Hopefully the six months after the conference will be calmer than the six months before it. ;)

Quick! Need Your Vote TODAY!

(Yep, I'm back, but it will be another day or two before I can get a post up on my trip...)

Need you guys to get clicking for me ASAP. I'm headed to NYC in two weeks for a search industry show. One of the vendors at the show throws a charity event every year to raise money for a different non-profit. This year, four of us got to put in our charity of choice and it's up to a vote to see who the event benefits. As you can imagine, I'm promoting HMBANA milk banks.

PLEASE go here and vote for the milk bank. Then send a quick email or throw up a blog post asking others to do the same. Voting ends at midnight tonight, so we've got to work quickly!

Thanks all!
